Feeding Catfish

Hello,
Has anyone on this forum ever witnessed Catfish taking live fish ( not hookbaits) on or near the surface? Does it sound anything like a Clonk noise and is there much surface disturbance?
The reason I am asking is, while fishing my local river here in Bulgaria, on a few ocassions at night there has been what sounded like big strikes at fish on the surface. A couple of times literally under my rod tips. Otters are numerous here and I cant decide whether Cats or Otters are responsible.
The only thing I can liken it too is a big Salmon or Sea Trout rolling on the surface. But does a Cat strike sound a bit like a Clonk?
